Detection at a Glance
Detecting internal faults at low currents in pole type distribution transformers can be difficult and dangerous for a line crew. The IFD allows the crew to easily and quickly detect these faults. The IFD improves their safety, customer service, and reduces operating costs.

The IFD tells the lineworker at a glance if an internal fault has occurred.

IFD Equipped Pole Type Transformer - Inspection Procedures
When called out to re-fuse a transformer, the line crew should first check to see if the transformer is IFD equipped:

If the transformer is IFD equipped and the IFD has activated, the line crew should take the necessary steps to replace the transformer.

No attempt should be made to re-fuse the transformer.

If the IFD has not activated (or the transformer is not IFD equipped) the crew should follow all the normal safety procedures as specified by each utility before re-fusing the transformer.
