Hydro Quebec Hydro-Quebec generates, transmits and distributes electricity, mainly using renewable energy sources, in particular hydroelectricity. It is one of the biggest electrical utilities in North America. The challenge The need for a better solution came from a transformer that had been taken out of service, and then tested with an off-line test unit. The transformer tested fine, was re-certified and re-stocked. When a lineman installed and re-fused the transformer it failed immediately, and dramatically. Since installing IFDs in all pole-mount transformers, starting in 2004, the confidence of the line crews in the IFD sensor has been proven. And, the business value to the utility was affirmed in a post audit completed by HQ engineering. Finally, this is seen as a substantial strategic decision - excellent information at a low-cost that lasts the life of the transformer, maintenance free. |
